| Robert Banks presents Equal Languages, a new video that addresses the social and cultural breakdown due to mainstream media consumption. Banks will transform a portion of the gallery into a black box showcasing Equal Languages on a continuous loop. The video, underlined by a haunting audio track, uses symbols to explore many forms of modern oppression through consumerism, class structure, and domestic struggle. On view Sept 4 through Sept 27, this installation invites viewers to respond and record messages concerning this issue which will later be used in a follow-up piece. The filmmaker attended the Cleveland School of the Arts and has taught film at Cuyahoga Community College, the Cleveland Institute of Art, and Cleveland State University. Banks has shown films at Sundance, was named Filmmaker of the Year at the Midwest Filmmakers Conference in 2001 and was the guest filmmaker in London at the BBC British Short Film Festival in 2000. back to SPACELab>> |
Gary Duehr explores our voyeuristic nature by re-presenting images taken from the media in his installation Cell . Duehr calls on the viewer to re-examine images captured from newspapers and magazines that bombard the public everyday. The artist explains his process as a daily scan of cultural concerns: calling the work a "cross-section", using political rallies, car crashes, domestic disputes, and military insurgencies to create a raw energy by the colliding vantage points. Dueher uses a cell phone camera to rephotograph the images, enlarges the photographs, and then reprints them on watercolor paper. The rough, patchy quality of the images provides a striking immediacy that makes it hard to look away-even though we might want to. Duehr has exhibited worldwide and in 2007 was chosen as the Best Emerging Artist in New England by the International Association of Art Critics. He has received grants from the LEF Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the New England Foundation for the Arts. The artist currently manages the Bromfield Art Gallery in Boston and codirects the Invisible Cities Group, a multi-media performance and visual arts group. |
