Feldman Collection

Arthur Feldman, charismatic patron of the arts

Digitally manipulated photograph of Arthur Feldman by Rita Montlack, 2003, used as cover image for SPACES' 2003 Annual Benefit & Art Acution: This is Art! Honoring Arthur Feldman

A man who embraced life to the fullest, Arthur Feldman turned his passion for art into a second career, becoming an inspiration to many famous and up-and-coming artists and a mentor to countless area art patrons.

A native Clevelander who went to Shaker Heights High School, Feldman began his career in finance. He started his own business, Paramount Finance Co., after graduating from Ohio State University. He also opened Insurance Premium Finance, which provided financing to people who couldn't afford to pay their auto insurance. It was then that he began a lifelong relationship with Peter B. Lewis, then CEO of Progressive Insurance, whom he advised on what would become Cleveland's premier private art collection.

After selling his business in 1970 after 35 years, Feldman devoted himself to the arts, eventually opening his gallery, Arthur Feldman Graphics.

Not merely a dealer, Feldman had well-established personal relationships with many of the artists he represented, including Robert Rauschenberg, the Japanese artist Arakawa, and Andre Villers, famed photographer of Picasso, Miro and Chagall.

His contributions to the arts world did not go unnoticed. In November 2004, Feldman was honored at a gala for SPACES, which brought out Cleveland's A-list to toast the charismatic man who was loved by everyone who knew him. At that event, Peter Lewis donated a $100,000 gift to SPACES in honor of his mentor and longtime friend.

A man with no formal education in the arts, Feldman bought what he liked - and encouraged others to do the same. It was this innate honesty and lack of pretension, coupled with a fierce intellect and a passion for aesthetic beauty, that so endeared him to artists and non-artists alike.

Arthur Feldman died January 2004 at the age of 88. A collection of art objects and ephemera was donated to SPACES by Arthur’s son, Dr. Robert Feldman, in 2007. This represents a selection from that gift.

"Time Exposed features [Sugimoto's] mesmeric seascapes. Here, time is the primary leitmotif--not so much the effects of the long exposures used in making many of the images--but historical time. Sugimoto was looking to record a scene that has remained more or less unchanged since man first appeared on the planet, a primal scene."--Parr & Badger, The Photobook: A History, vol. I
