Looking for a good book? SPACES invites you to read up on contemporary art, literally. Leave your dictionary at home and head over to SPACES Gallery for Page Me, an exhibition of artist-made books, self-published zines and alternative comics on view from January 10 - February 21. Curated by Christa Donner (SPACES, Ladyfriend Zine) and Chris Conti (Wexner Center for the Arts), this exhibition features the work of over 100 artists from Ohio and across North America who create books as works of art, including selections loaned from the extensive artists' book collection at the Cleveland Institute of Art. Curl up in our reading room and sample everything from high tech internet book projects to low-budget xeroxing to one-of-a-kind sculptural books. Join us for an opening reception on Friday, January 10th, from 5-9pm. The exhibition and opening are free and open to the public. Free parking is available on the Superior Viaduct. The diversity of artist-made books has been evolving for decades, and has developed into a variety of media. Page Me includes works that involve toy View Masters (tm), audio soundtracks and internet connections. Keikichi Honna (Columbus, OH) presents a book "written" entirely in bar-codes, and can be read only with a commercial scanner that translates the lines into the artist's text. Holly Morrison and Carolyn Fraser (both based in Cleveland) exhibit their painstakingly printed book, The Extinguishing of Stars, along with the printmaking tools and rough drafts used to create it. The exhibition also features original pages from cutting-edge comic-book artists like Derf (Cleveland), Dame Darcy (New York, NY), Anders Nilsen (Chicago, IL), Jessica Abel (Brooklyn, NY) and former Clevelander Debbie Drechsler (Santa Rosa, CA), who uses green and brown inks to convey discomfort and nostalgia in her comic-book novel about teenage girlhood. The exhibition also highlights the art of zines: self published magazines that range from Davy Rothbart's (Ann Arbor, MI) FOUND, a xeroxed collection of found notes and objects, to Steven B. Smith's (Cleveland) ArtCrimes, an ongoing collaboration between artists and poets the exhibition that spans 17 years and 20 issues, changing formats from color xeroxes to video to popcorn-boxed editions. The exhibition includes a resource room where visitors can find out more about ordering and making their own artists' books, zines and comics, and a special reading room where self-publishers can add their own work to a special "add-your-own" rack. Don't miss our Zine-o-Phobia events and be sure to check out our list of zine, comix and artists' book resources . Zines, artists and creators include Joyce Brabner, Rosemarie Chiarlone, Melissa Jay Craig, Farel Dalrymple, East Village Inky, Kevin Fagan, Don Harvey, Paul Hornschemeier, Cindy Iverson, David Lasky, Keith Lord, Nikki McClure, Caesar Meadows, Tony Millionaire, Harvey Pekar, Emily Reiser, Camille Severinsen, Dash Shaw, the Visible Woman and many more. SPACES is a non-profit, artist-run, alternative space gallery. Since 1978, SPACES has given over 7,000 artists in the visual and performing arts an arena in which to present challenging new ideas. SPACES is located at 2220 Superior Viaduct on the West side of the Flats. Superior Viaduct runs parallel to the Detroit Superior Bridge at the intersection of West 25th Street. ## zine, comix and artists' book resources
