SPACES presents two installation exhibitions by artists Ethan Murrow and Ann Mansolino as a part of its SPACE Lab program. SPACE Lab focuses on smaller, experimental and timely projects. Applications are reviewed year round by a committee of young working artists. Ethan Murrow (Blowing Rock, NC) explores cycles of agricultural erosion and rebuilding in his installation land laid bare, on view at SPACES from January 10 - 31. Murrow covers the gallery walls with paper that has been stained with soil and grass, scraped, stitched, ripped apart and carved into, then reconstructed to represent the cycles of agressively farmed and grazed landscape. The large de- and re-composed sheets read like a giant pages on the gallery walls, with textures rather than text used to examine both natural cycles and human activity. From February 4 - 21, you'll have the chance to experience a book made of light and shadow, walls and hanging pages, as artist Ann Mansolino (Columbus, OH) presents her site-specific installation, Echoes of a Broken Conversation. The basis for this project is an earlier artist's book Mansolino printed in paper form, investigating communication and miscommunication. For this installation the artist has reproduced her text and images to glass plates, which are suspended from the gallery ceiling near a single light source. The turning and twisting pages are projected onto the gallery walls, creating a shifting narrative that changes with the viewers' own movement through the space. SPACES is a non-profit, artist-run, alternative space gallery. Since 1978, SPACES has given over 7,000 artists in the visual and performing arts an arena in which to present challenging new ideas. SPACES is located at 2220 Superior Viaduct on the West side of the Flats. Superior Viaduct runs parallel to the Detroit Superior Bridge at the intersection of West 25th Street. |
