SPACES presents two installation exhibitions by artists Stephanie Gray and Justin Lodge as a part of our SPACE Lab program. SPACE Lab focuses on smaller, experimental and timely projects. Applications are reviewed year round by a committee of younger artists. Stephanie Gray’s (Buffalo, NY) installation of comfortable armchairs, coffee table and television may remind you of a living room or doctor’s waiting room, with a twist. In close yr hearing for the cap(shuns), Gray uses sound and video projection to explore the experience of partial hearing loss, confronting the viewer with a barrage of phonics instruction, insensitive slurs, and the difficulty of vowel pronunciations which are a part of her everyday experience. This installation will be on view from November 17 – December 8. Justin Lodge (Cleveland, OH) transforms the room into a shifting environment of clouds and static in his installation, From Where You Stand, on view from December 12 to 29. Lodge uses projected images, hanging fabric and sound to examine the relationship between nature and technology. Gallery hours for SPACES are Saturday 11-5pm, Sunday 1-5pm, and Tuesday through Friday 11-5:30pm. SPACES is a non-profit, artist-run alternative space gallery. Since 1978, SPACES has given over 5500 artists in the visual and performing arts an arena in which to present challenging new ideas. SPACES is located at 2220 Superior Viaduct on the West Side of the Flats. Superior Viaduct runs parallel to the Detroit Superior Bridge at the intersection of West 25th Street. |
