SPACELab

SPACES presents installations by Chad Kessler and Aurora Hughes Villa as part of its SPACELab program. SPACELab focuses on smaller, experimental and timely projects. Applications are reviewed year round by a committee of working artists.

Mar 19 - Apr 16
Chad Kessler
(Canton, OH), a recent graduate of Kent State University with a BFA in painting, invites us to invest in the physical process of creativity. Kessler's minimalist installation (pri -zent' ) the (prez'-nt) includes an illuminated table, a digital camera, a pencil, an eraser and paper. Convinced that people are unable to genuinely understand the past or accurately predict the future, Kessler challenges us all to recycle space, time, and experience through the ritual procedure of mark-making and erasure.

Apr 20 - May 14
Aurora Hughes Villa
, Assistant Professor of Art at North Central College (Naperville, IL), reminds us of our capacity to discard the past and people associated with it. Villa's Pocket Diaries reflect on the aging process by examining memory and time. Slip cast molds, clay objects, ceramic tiles, recorded sound, and antiquated images urge us to reminisce and consider the exchanges that occur between young and old.

SPACES is a non-profit, artist-run, alternative space gallery. Since 1978, SPACES has given over 7,000 artists in the visual and performing arts an arena in which to present challenging new ideas. SPACES is located at 2220 Superior Viaduct on the West side of the Flats. Superior Viaduct runs parallel to the Detroit Superior Bridge at the intersection of West 25th Street.
