House: Case Study Cleveland

May 3 - June 14, 2002

SPACES

How do you update the American Dream? More than 50 years after the debut of the original Case Study House program in Southern California, 9 Midwest architects/teams will present their vision for the future of affordable housing as SPACES Gallery presents House: Case Study Cleveland, an exhibition and competition that reexamines the goals of the Case Study House program for a Midwestern, post-industrial city. The premise of the Case Study House program, to create superior, architect-designed housing for typical American families, takes on new meaning and relevance today, at a time when real estate prices are booming but well-designed, affordable housing is hard to find.

Like the original the Case Study House program, House: Case Study Cleveland critically examines the relationship of superior, architect-designed housing and typical American families. However, this is the first time such an examination has been made in the context of a 21st Century, post-industrial, economically and racially diverse urban setting. The exhibition features high-quality, aesthetically challenging designs that incorporate the creative use of materials. Competing architects were given few boundaries except that the construction budget is not to exceed $180,000.

Don't miss the free opening reception on May 3, SPACES presents an opening reception for the exhibition from 5-9 p.m. All stages of the design process will be on view, including schematic drawings, three-dimensional models and computer renderings. The opening event will also feature architectural fashions by Akron artist Angela White, whose models mingle with visitors, wearing fanciful costumes inspired by architects' designs. Don't miss our special Panel Discussion and Announcement of the Winning Design on May 22nd!

Architecture teams and individual architects creating work for this exhibition are:
Mehrdad Hadighi with Michael Maggio (Buffalo, NY)
IS.Ar Iwamoto Scott Architecture (Ann Arbor, MI and Berkeley, CA)
Robert Levit Studio with Cicada Design (Toronto, Ontario)
Steven Mankouche (Buffalo, NY)
Cadwell Murphy (Columbus, OH)
PLY Architecture and Design (Ann Arbor, MI)
Shawn Rickenbacker and AR + D (Columbus, OH) Thom Stauffer Architects (Kent, OH)
WETSU (Ann Arbor, MI)

The exhibition and competition, which runs from May 3 - June 14, 2002, will be judged by an award-winning panel led by internationally renowned architect Rafael Vinoly. Mr. Vinoly is the architect for the Cleveland Museum of Art's major new expansion project, as well as the Tokyo International Forum, the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh, the Frederick P. Rose Hall in New York, and many others.

In addition to Vinoly, the other members of the jury are: Jeffrey Strean, director of design and facilities at the Cleveland Museum of Art; and the exhibition's three curators: Robert Bostwick, architect and principal for design at Collins Gordon Bostwick Architects (Cleveland); Julie Langsam, artist and associate professor of painting at the Cleveland Institute of Art; and John C. Williams, architect, principal and founder of Process Creative Studios (Cleveland). Third Federal Bank has generously agreed to facilitate the construction of the house and place the completed house on the market.

SPACES is located at 2220 Superior Viaduct on the West side of the Flats. Superior Viaduct runs parallel to the Detroit Superior Bridge at the intersection of West 25th Street.
