SPACELab

SPACES presents two installation exhibitions by artists Joyce Burstein and Angela White as a part of its SPACE Lab program. Both exhibitions will be on view from May 3 - June 14, and you can meet the artists at an opening reception on Friday, May 3 from 5-9pm. SPACE Lab focuses on smaller, experimental and timely projects. Applications are reviewed year round by a committee of younger artists. The exhibition and opening reception are free and open to the public.

Joyce Burstein (New York, NY) confronts the taboo of death with humor and reverence in her multi-location installation, The Epitaph Project. Last summer Burstein installed a tombstone carved from slate and finished as a chalkboard in Cleveland's Lakeview Cemetery. Visitors are invited to write their epitaphs in chalk on the stone and the piece changes daily. For SPACELab, Burstein creates an indoor version of the stone, on a green silk rug created by the artist to simulate a grassy gravesite. Digital images collected from both sites, as well as a permanent version of this piece installed in Hollywood Cemetery in CA, will gradually cover the walls of the space, giving visitors a glimpse into the last wishes and often humorous or poignant thoughts of visitors to all three locations.

What will you wear around the house of the future? On Friday, May 3rd, to coincide with the opening of the exhibition House: Case Study Cleveland, fashion merges with architecture as Angela White (Akron, OH), a graduating sculpture student at the University of Akron, presents Body Buildings. White's models will wear her fanciful, sculptural costumes inspired by architects' designs as they mingle with visitors. After the opening, White's dresses will be on view along with design sketches, blueprints and documentation.

SPACES is a non-profit, artist-run, alternative space gallery. Since 1978, SPACES has given over 6,500 artists in the visual and performing arts an arena in which to present challenging new ideas.
