SPACELab

SPACES presents installations by Margaret Kimura, Masha Ryskin and Carol Hummel as part of its SPACELab program. These projects will be on view June 11 - July 31, 2004. Celebrate with the artists at the opening reception on Friday, June 11, from 5-9pm.

Margaret Kimura (Cleveland, OH) and Masha Ryskin (Honeoye Falls, NY) have been collaborating since 1997. Their installation White Nights deals with the balance of opposing forces and the tactile quality of landscape. While Kimura uses old prints, notes and patterns given to her by her grandmother, Ryskin uses commonly overlooked everyday elements such as tea bags, dryer sheets, tissue, cracks and stains. Together the artists create a complexly layered collage focused on the residue of everyday life.

Carol Hummel, a Kent State University graduate student in sculpture, addresses the issues of personal choice and the danger of self-imposed imprisonment. Hummel's giant, pumpkin-shaped jail titled Peter, Peter, Pumpkin Eater is fabricated of solid steel and straight pins. By constructing an alluring, almost inviting jail, Hummel explores the fine psychological lines between fear and comfort, protector and predator, reality and illusion.

SPACELab focuses on smaller, experimental and timely projects. Applications are reviewed year round by a committee of working artists.

SPACES is a non-profit, artist-run, alternative space gallery. Since 1978, SPACES has given over 7,000 artists in the visual and performing arts an arena in which to present challenging new ideas. SPACES is located at 2220 Superior Viaduct on the West side of the Flats. Superior Viaduct runs parallel to the Detroit Superior Bridge at the intersection of West 25th Street.
