Influence: Art and Identity

How do artists address issues of identity? Discuss issues of identity in contemporary art with leading area artists as SPACES, the Cleveland Institute of Art and the Cleveland Public Library present Influence: Art and Identity. This special conference will be held on Saturday, September 22 from 10am - 4pm at the Cleveland Public Library's Louis Stokes Wing Auditorium. Panelists will examine the role of cultural identity in the work of today's artists. This program is presented in conjunction with Between the Borders: New Forms of Identity, an exhibition of work by artists using new media to explore the concept of identity, on view at SPACES from Sep 7 - Oct 19, 2001.

The program features a keynote speech by New York artist Fred Wilson, who creates installations that question viewers' assumptions about race and identity. Speakers will include Johnny Coleman, Associate Professor of Art at Oberlin College; Masumi Hayashi, Professor of Art, Cleveland State University; Pipo Nguyen-Duy, Assistant Professor of Art, Oberlin College; and Kaylynn Two Trees, Scholar-in-Residence at The Cleveland Institute of Art. The AKI Festival of New Music
Saturday, Oct 13th , 8pm


Join us for an evening of art and music as The Today Band performs works by local and national contemporary composers Harold Meltzer, Dennis Eberhard, Andrew Rindfleisch, Carlos Carillo, Chris Auerbach-Brown and Adrianne Elisha. Performers will include Kathy Chastian, alto flute; Adrianne Elisha, viola; James VanDemark, double bass; Jonathan Golub, cello; Ted Rounds, percussion. Performance begins at 8pm on Saturday, October 13th at SPACES, as part of the AKI Festival of New Music sponsored by the Cleveland Museum of Art. This event is FREE and open to the public!

SPACES is a non-profit, artist-run alternative space gallery. Since 1978, SPACES has given over 6,000 artists an arena in which to present challenging new ideas. SPACES is located at 2220 Superior Viaduct on the West Side of the Flats. Superior Viaduct runs parallel to the Detroit-Superior Bridge at the intersection of West 25th Street.
