Physical Landscapes
Between Body and Mind 9/11-10/22, 1999
Opening Reception: Sept 17, 5-9 pm

Come and have an out-of-body experience at SPACES, as the gallery presents Physical Landscapes: Between Body and Mind, our first exhibition devoted entirely to projected video installations by Ohio artists. The exhibition opens to the public on September 11th and runs through October 22nd. There will be a free opening reception on Friday, September 17th from 5-9pm.

The multisensory medium of large-scale video projection is used by each artist to create moving, sound-filled, site-specific works that explore the dialogue between the physical and the cerebral. dennis dukeman(Norton, OH) projects huge, dual close-ups of his own head in motion, using its movement as a larger metaphor for the human condition, whileClaudia Esslinger (Gambier, OH), examines the search for and abuse of human power through the symbol of the divining rod. Her installation includes hundreds of forked sticks pointing to a video projection on a scrim made of animal gut. Xiaomin Gu (Columbus, OH) creates an environment of meditation to be experienced by one viewer at a time. In a small, intimate space, his video projection of physical gestures is paired with mirrors to evoke a personal connection between body and mind. Lynn Tjernan Lukkas (Oberlin, OH) examines a different experience of bodily awareness in her site-specific work "Epura". In this work she deals with the concept of ritual purification through her footage of a body weightlessly immersed in water, projected on multiple layers of screens.

Gallery Hours for SPACES are Saturday 11-5pm, Sunday 1-5pm, and Tuesday through Friday 11-5:30pm.
