What More Could an Artist Ask For?   12.01.11

Earlier this year, we received a kind email/testimonial from an artist who participated in the 2010 exhibition, A Vague Whole. I thought I would share it with you:

Why SPACES was the best thing that happened to my art in 2010

I was invited to exhibit work in the group exhibition at SPACES in the autumn of 2010. I didn't know what to expect of the newly revamped contemporary art space in Cleveland, but upon arrival I was immediately impressed with the way the team at treated us with respect and greeted us as professionals.

Upon entering I was surprised to see a space that was huge by normal gallery standards. Their openness and enthusiasm extended into this space as well, where the staff encouraged us to engage the environment and took full trust in the artist's integrity by allowing full use the space. On top of this generosity, SPACES offered a substantial stipend, which personally helped me realize some larger ideas that ultimately lead to breakthrough in my work.

The conditions offered at SPACES allow artists to grow and advance in tangible ways, I can't say enough about the importance of this. It is surprising that this organization isn't truly recognized for the work they are doing, while paying respect to the 30-year legacy they are injecting a much needed fresh and contemporary perspective in the local creative community. I believe they will eventually get the attention, respect and recognition they truly deserve, until then make it a point to become personally involved, or simply drop in and enjoy the work.
