community speaks [volume 1] is a consciousness raising session led by Maria Miranda about feelings, thoughts, and experiences around police, violence, and members of Cleveland (and beyond) neighborhoods and families. Following the C-R model (which has an American history in the Civil and Women's Rights movements of the mid 20th century), we will identify and discuss common themes, perhaps relating to ally-ship, community and individual support for parents and families of black men and boys, and creating safe spaces for discussing race oppression and privilege among black and white people.
About the organizers of this event:
She Speaks began in March of 2010 at Visible Voice Books in the Tremont neighborhood of Cleveland, Ohio as a monthly open mic poetry event centered around bringing together women to share and inspire through written word. We are now a growing collective that works to address inequity through socially engaged art and advocacy with a focus on strengthening the female voice, without exclusion.
SPACES recently offered its venue to citizens, community groups, protesters, and cultural producers who need a SPACE to organize and generate dialogue around the recents events taking place in our city.
