Cleveland's rich history and contribution to the field of enamel make Northeast Ohio a center of enameling activity in the United States. To celebrate this legacy of innovation, SPACES presents Enamel: Beyond the Object, showcasing a new era for this ancient enduring medium within the context of contemporary art.
With the recent resurgence of interest in enamel as an artistic medium, Enamel: Beyond the Object features works by artists who push the technical limits of enamel and find new modes of visual expression. Along with exhibitions and events set to run concurrently at the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, The Cleveland Institute of Art, and Murray Hill area galleries, SPACES' exhibition will provide a unique opportunity for enamel artists who create large-scale works and installations.
Among Northeast Ohio's key enamel resources are The Cleveland Institute of Art and Kent State University, which are among a very few institutions nationwide who offer enameling programs, as well as the Ferro Corporation, the world's leading manufacturer in ceramic coatings. Curated by Gretchen Goss, Associate Professor of Enameling at the Cleveland Institute of Art, Enamel: Beyond the Object features work by 10 emerging and internationally established artists who technically and conceptually reinterpret enamel as an artistic medium.
Enamel: Beyond the Object is funded by the Kulas Foundation.
