SPACELab

SPACES presents installations by artists Brad McCombs and Nami Yamamoto as part of its SPACELab program. The shows will run in conjunction with Topographic, opening January 21 with a reception from 5-9pm. SPACELab focuses on smaller, experimental and timely projects. Applications are reviewed year round by a committee of working artists.

Jan 21 - Feb 12
Brad McCombs
(Cincinnati, OH) transpositional adaptations McCombs draws on concepts in anthropology, ecology and sociology as he explores the fundamentals of survival, adaptation and shelter. The artist engages viewers in his process by building his installation through a series of performances, when he creates structures such as igloos, bark huts and alien colonies in different environments simulated with video projection and props.
Actions take place:
Jan 21, 5-9pm - Tundra
Feb 4, 5-9pm - Rainforest
Feb 11, 5-9pm - Alien Planet

Feb 16 - Mar 11
Nami Yamamoto
(Philadelphia, PA) Primordial Soup
Yamamoto transforms a room in the gallery into an abstract landscape by installing tiny plastic and vinyl forms that seem to crawl across the floor, emerge from the walls, or float in the air. The artist alters the function of vinyl and plastic, materials typically used in commercial manufacturing, to create simple yet suggestive forms such as bubbles or honeycombs. Somewhere between microcosm and macrocosm, the colorful shapes create an environment continually shifting from reality to illusion, titillating the imagination yet denying closure.
