The following criteria are used to select artists for residencies:
- The quality of the artist's work in relation to SPACES' mission
- Recommendations from Ohio and other American artists who have participated in international residencies
- Recommendations from directors or curators of international residency programs
- Slides of the artist's work and a statement proposing a project for the residency and preference for a public/community program
- An interview with the prospective artist

The visiting artist will be asked to do the following:
- Remain in residence for six weeks.
- Create work for an exhibition at SPACES that will be on view for six weeks.
- Participate in a public program such as a workshop, public lecture, or community project. The residency coordinator and each artist determine the activity's scope and format.
- Set aside open studio hours when the artist will be available to the public.
- SPACES will invite each artist to donate a small work to its annual benefit auction.

SPACES will provide:
- A Residency Coordinator who will coordinate the artist's activities and public programs, accompany him/her on visits and trips within Cleveland and Ohio, and help arrange other trips outside of the city and state.
- Basic studio space with hardwood floors, an 11 ft. ceiling, running water, basement storage space, and a separate living space.
- $2000 honorarium, stipend for housing, a limited budget for material costs.
- An exhibition at SPACES of the work created during the residency.
- An illustrated, modest publication on the residency, with an essay by a curator or critic.
- Publicity, an opening reception, introductions to area artists, museum and gallery curators and directors, and other arts professionals, including Ohio Arts Council staff.
- Access to documentation (slides, photographs) of the residency and/or work created.
- SPACES staff assistance locating materials, in-kind donations, other organizations with facilities, transportation to events, museums, etc.
- Images of work with information on the artist and the residency on SPACES' Web site
