Darrin Martin

Biography

Darrin Martin is an artist and educator born in New York. Through video, sculpture, print and multi-channel installations, Martin's works engage the synesthetic qualities of perception as a way to examine the limits of certainty. Influenced by his own experiences with hearing loss, his current projects have been considering notions of accessibility through the use of tactility, sonic analogies, and audio descriptions. His videos have screened internationally at festivals and museums, including the Museum of Modern Art, Pacific Film Archives, Impakt Festival, European Media Art Festival, and in 2009 he toured a program of works to over a dozen cities in the United States. His installations have exhibited at venues including The Kitchen in New York. Grand Central Art Center in Santa Ana, and the Center for Contemporary Art in Sacramento. Most recently, he held a solo exhibition titled "Pattern Recognition" at Aggregate Space Gallery in Oakland, CA.

Martin frequently collaborates with artist Torsten Zenas Burns, building diverse speculative fictions around re-imagined educational practices. Their works have been included in screenings and exhibitions in venues including The Oberhausen Short Film Festival, The Paris/Berlin International, Eyebeam, and the Dumbo Arts Center in Brooklyn. They recently mounted an exhibition in Fall 2014 titled "ARK3: The Workshop Scenarios" at the Fosdick-Nelson Gallery at Alfred University that will be re-imagined in an upcoming exhibition at Krowswork Gallery in Oakland, CA.
