Lynn Book has a 25 year history of interdisciplinary artistic practice that traverses boundaries between performance art, dance, theater, writing and new music forms. Critics from the New York Times, Village Voice and Chicago Tribune have called her work "bold", "inspired" and "unlike anything anyone else is doing". Her diverse works have received citations, fellowships, and awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, Illinois Arts Council, Franklin Furnace, Mary Duke Biddle Foundation, and MacArthur Foundation funding for the production of a radio drama based upon her performance theater piece, "Gorgeous Fever." Book's recent large scale work "RE:garding Next", is a collaborative culture project launched in spring 2007 at the SouthEastern Center for Contemporary Art in Winston-Salem, NC and involves numerous collaborators, most notably, Austrian composer and extended pianist Katharina Klement.
Book's performance, CDs and exhibition projects have been seen and heard in the US and in Europe. They include "RE:Next", the concert, "a divining tool for the future made of 3 women, voice, violin, extended piano, electronics and video" which was performed at Roulette in New York City and in Pittsburgh in 2007 and most recently "RE:Next 3" was performed in Vienna, Austria in July, 2008 . A recording of that concert with Katharina Klement will be released in 2009. Previous concert performances at Roulette include, "notes on desire" which premiered in 2003 with percussionist and composer Kevin Norton and later as scaleable performance art concerts from solo to quartet formats.New York Foundation for the Arts supported several projects with Book as originator, writer, composer, choreographer, and producer, including the "The Dice Project", with Elise Kermani co-producing a CD of adventurous women composers and an accompanying series of live concert and media events at Thundergulch, EAR Studios at RPI, and The Kitchen in New York. Elsewhere in New York she has performed at the Knitting Factory, HERE, Judson Church, Roulette, Bowery Poetry Club and Dixon Place and at other venues in the US and Europe including the Museum of Contemporary Art and Hothouse in Chicago, the Cleveland International Performance Art Festival, and Emmetrop in Bourges and Ex "N Pop in Berlin. Book has collaborated and/or worked on diverse projects with architect Johannes Knesl, percussionist and composer Kevin Norton, director Valeria Vasilevski, vocal artist Theo Bleckmann, sound and media artists Jens Brand and Lou Mallozzi, architect and writer Madeline Gins, extended pianist Katharina Klement, violinist Jacqui Carrasco, bassist Tatsu Aoki, experimental filmmaker Sharon Couzin, theater artist Ping Chong and many others. Recently, Book's creative output has returned to visual art frameworks which have included installations and a book project. She anticipates the release of 2 new CDs in 2009.
Lynn Book founded Voicelab, an educational and cultural organization in New York in 1999 through which she produced emerging artists featuring extended voice in original performances and taught and coached individuals in private practice until 2005. Her belief in creative engagement as the most critical competency in the vitality and sustainability of contemporary culture has led her to develop dynamic programs springing from her interdisciplinary approach to creativity. In the past, Book contributed to the development of groundbreaking programs that foster innovations in performance and new media in Chicago at The School of the Art Institute (1985-95), and in New York City at The Sidney Kahn Kitchen Summer Institute (2000-05). Lynn Book relocated to Winston-Salem, NC in 2005 where she is Director of the Program for Creativity and Innovation with the Office of Entrepreneurship and Liberal Arts and Visiting Associate Professor in the Department of Theatre and Dance at Wake Forest University. She continues to serve on the faculty of Transart Institute in Europe where she teaches and advises MFA candidates from around the world.
