my favorite event of the year...by Josh Usmani   03.28.14

Monster Drawing Rally is my favorite event of the year in Cleveland.

I was first invited to participate in 2012 by Dante Rodriguez. I'd never been to the MDR before, and had no idea what to expect, but I knew it would be special as soon as I heard the concept: 100+ artists drawing live in a gallery for one-night-only to benefit SPACES.

This will be my third year participating. I look forward to it more and more every year. This year, I had the honor of designing the official promotional image for the event. Also, I'm honored to be one of this year's guest curators – charged with selecting some of the participants.

Typically, artists do their craft in the solitude of their studios. The work appears completed in galleries like magic. Some artists (like performance artists) create their work in front of their audience, but most visual artists never "perform" in front of their audience unless they're sketching at a coffee shop or something.

The energy in the room is palpable. It's not often that 100+ artists gather in one place to create. This collective creativity creates an atmosphere that radiates with positive energy. You're sure to feel it the second you walk through the door.

All the work is sold for $65. With all the work priced equally, the artists are competing, not just for your attention, but your patronage. However, sales are not guaranteed, so artists are forced into competition to stand out amongst such a diverse, talented field. In this way, SPACES simultaneously creates an event that is both cooperative and competitive. Similarly, patrons must compete with each other to purchase their favorite works. If more than one person wishes to purchase a work, they must draw cards. If you aren't paying attention, your favorite piece may be gone before you notice. It's this healthy competition that keeps raising the bar at each annual event.

For one-night-only, SPACES allows these talented artists the opportunity to perform like "rock stars" in front of thousands of viewers. It also gives the audience a rare glimpse into more than a hundred creative processes. In one night, viewers can see dozens of techniques and styles.

The best part for the audience is the ability to purchase work that was created in front of their eyes. Any work bought at the MDR is a guaranteed conversation starter. Not only do you get a new, one-of-a-kind work of art; you get a story to go along with it.

SPACES' Monster Drawing Rally is a mutually beneficial experience for the artists, the audience and SPACES. Don't miss this special evening at SPACES Saturday, April 12th 6-10pm.

No Exit FREE Concert Nov 15 8:30pm   11.09.13

Greetings Friends,

If you're a fan of jazz, classical, the experimental or the downright avant-garde, then please join us for our November series of concerts - a tribute to the music (and musings) of the Raymond Scott Quintette.

We're only doing two shows in the Cleveland area: Friday, November 15 at SPACES and Monday, November 18 at Cleveland State University. Both concerts are free and open to the public! No Exit will also be making it's PAUSA art house debut on Saturday, November 16. This will truly going to be an amazing (and unusual) evening of music...... not to be missed!

The work of the extraordinary, brilliant, at times outlandish and always entertaining Raymond Scott has seen quite the revival. No Exit, along with some very special guest, are so very pleased to be presenting a program of brand new arrangements of Scott's music - by pianist Geoffrey Burleson, Russ Gershon, Greg DʼAlessio, Chris Auerbach-Brown and Eric Gonzalez - and a couple of original pieces inspired by the man himself - courtesy of No Exitʼs own James Praznik and Timothy Beyer. This will be the Ensemble's first program comprised entirely of world premiere pieces!

Joining members of the standing ensemble will be saxophonist Russ Gershon (of Either/Orchestra fame), percussionist Dinesh Joseph (of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra), drummer Ed Davis and trumpeter Scott McKee - who played with us on our 'Eric Dolphy' program back in 2011.

For more info on Raymond Scott, you can go to [raymondscott.com] and/or find a veritable plethora of musical treats on YouTube.

Word of mouth is always the best form of publicity, so please...... share it with your friends, bring a date, run through the streets screaming it at the top of your lungs, etc..

Thank you for your support!

Best Wishes,

Tim

The Countdown Begins   10.24.13

With only a little over a week left until the big day, it is already not hard to tell that SPACES is getting ready for a fantastic night. Artists are coming and going bringing artwork to line the walls, there are cookies out for the board members, and excitement is in the air. It's as if the holidays have come early this year, but instead of holiday colors we'll wear our go-go boots and mustaches!

The hustle around here is contagious, with everyone getting ready for the big day. The silent auction is really coming together as the gallery is filled with great artwork waiting to be put on display.

The disco balls are going up, the phones are going off, and the SPACES family is wasting no time while dreams of dada dance in our heads.

On Saturday, November 2nd, SPACES is the place to be.
The Disco Dada Dreamscape is an experience you won't forget.
